Well there is the UID project which is aimed at identity verification and now there is a new project that Government seems to be pursuing and that is the online degree verification project. The government has appointed a team to create a national database of academic qualifications which shall ensure confidentiality, authenticity, online verification and easy retrieval of degrees.
This team shall submit the details of the e-certificate project by the end of this month and then the government shall appoint one of of the two i.e. either National Securities Depository Ltd or Central Depository Services (India) Ltd to create and manage this database.
Why is this a huge project?
There are a total of 490 government recognized universities with over 2.54 million students getting a graduate or postgraduate degree every year and over 9.5 million students clear their secondary school examinations. These are mind boggling numbers to say the least!
What will this benefit?
This will definitely benefit the cross verification of CV’s for prospective employers who would like to check the authenticity of a candidates profile. Once launched this database could be integrated by Job sites to provide certified resumes and the weed out incorrect of false resumes that affect their credibility as well.
When will this be launched?
Well the database creation itself is a 2 year process and given the speed at which our government works on technology projects expect a time delay in anycase but nonetheless to their benefit its great to see such a project being considered and hope it does see the light of the day.
